There is an open issue and forum post here which I was referring to after having a similar issue. Anyway, happy to help anyone with reading the variable pressure sensing data on the MPR121 who may come across this.

I suspect it might be a peculiarity in libDaisy I2CHandle . It might be interesting to see if it works in DaisyDuino. Edit: Yes, it works in DaisyDuino, using Adafruit MPR121test.ino. This uses Arduino Wire library for I2C.
